Ceiling Lighting can really make a room, depending on the mood ceiling lights can either subtly compliemnt their surroundings or become a central feature and pull all the other elements of the room together.

There are very many different types of ceiling lighting available on the market but before you decide what you want you should consider how you will using the room you are buying the light fittings for, it is important to determine how big the room is and the height of the ceiling as the will decide the size of the lights you need to use

Next you need to think about where the light will be placed within the room, for example if you are planning for a kitchen you need to consider focsuing lights on the various work stations or in a dining room you may want single pendant hanging above the dining table

Ceiling Lighting Styles


There are many different styles available on the market, take a look and decide which is best for your needs

Pendant Lighting

Pendant Lights are used predominately where a focused light is necessary, this is referred to as task lighting. for example a dining room table or above a bed. Although pendants can also be inverted and focused towards a ceiling where the light is diffused providing ambient light




Downlights / Recessed Ceiling Lighting

Downlights are an ideal subtle lighting source, they are flush with the ceiling so work to compliment any room, light can be focused on specific subjects, spread across surfaces such as walls and corners or diffused from the source to create an ambient effect



Chandeliers

Chandeliers are commonly thought of as traditional feature lighting however modern chandeliers can be very contemporary and can compliment a range of rooms including hallways, kitchens, living rooms and bathrooms.

Flush Mount Ceiling Lights

Flush mounted fixtures are exactly that, they sit flush against the ceiling which is handy when you are looking for a feature fixture on a lower ceiling. Although flush mount fixtures they are also available as more subtle fixtures and can blend seamlessly into the ceiling of any room. When purchasing flush mounted fixtures please consider changing bulbs can be tricky especially when mounted on higher ceilings






Semi Flush Mount Ceiling Lights

A semi-flush mounts hangs several inches from the ceiling, often on a fixed rod or chain. These are perfect for giving the impression of depth with an almost chandelier like feel but they can be placed on ceilings with a lower clearance. Semi Flush fixtures are available in both ambient lighting and focused, task lighting styles. 






Ceiling Track Lighting

Track lighting is available in a wide range of styles from fixed straight length tracks to sliding lamps on dynamic movable tracks, these are relatively simple to install and are very flexible allowing you change the focus of the lamps on the track whenever you need to.

Track lighting is often used in kitchens where the lamps on the track are positioned to focus on the workstations but they can also be used to serve as ambient lighting when the lamps are focused on ceiling and walls, creating ceiling and wall wash.






Island Lighting

Predominately used in kitchens and dining ares, like pendant lights, island lights are hung from a ceiling and often used to illuminate a specific feature, they contain more lamps however so are useful for drawing light onto larger subjects
