Every major invention seems to undergo a major facelift every few generations. Think about how music, for example, has evolved from records to cassette tapes to CDs. Similarly, lighting has come a far way since the first filament bulb was introduced over a century ago. Despite an amazingly long run, the traditional incandescent bulbs are now becoming dimmer and lighting fewer households as they are gradually phased out in favor of superior lighting sources like the LED.

The modern lifestyle that we enjoy and take granted for today is in large part thanks to the discovery of electricity and the advent of the light bulb. It was said that Thomas Edison tried and failed over 1,000 times before successfully developing the first light bulb. Well Edison would be squealing in delight in his coffin right now if he knew that society is still using his invention 100 years after it was released to the public.

While they are still in use, it is only a matter of time before they are completely phased out in favor of more energy efficient alternatives like compact fluorescent light and light-emitting diodes.
